Barbara Ann Freeman

Barbara Ann Freeman was born on June 9, 1951, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Robert (“Bobby”) Mitchell and Ruth Ann Mitchell. After her mother remarried, Barbara was lovingly raised by her mother and stepfather, Clyde Leon Rogers, both of whom preceded her in death.

Barbara was educated in the Kansas City Public School System and was baptized at an early age at St. Stephen Baptist Church, where she began her lifelong walk with the Lord. Throughout her life she drew strength and comfort from God’s Word and found peace in the sounds of gospel music.

From childhood, Barbara radiated joy and energy. She was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and unforgettable signature dance—affectionately called “the Four Corners.” Shopping trips downtown were among her favorite pastimes, and her natural sense of style often turned heads. Gifted with a creative spirit, Barbara could see an outfit she admired and sew a beautiful replica to wear the very same day. Her exceptional talent as a seamstress blessed family, friends, and neighbors for many years, as she lovingly crafted and tailored clothing for countless people in her community.

Barbara’s generous heart was evident in every chapter of her life. For more than 25 years, she provided in-home childcare, offering a safe and nurturing environment where children thrived and parents found peace of mind. Later, she continued her dedication to service during her years of employment at Walmart, where her kindness and warm smile touched customers and coworkers alike.

Family was the centerpiece of Barbara’s world. She shared a devoted marriage with her late husband, William Freeman, and embraced her roles as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cherished friend. She is survived by her beloved children: Theresa Mitchell, Carl Mitchell, and Michael Freeman (wife Kenyana). Barbara’s family continues through ten treasured grandchildren and ten adored great-grandchildren, each a joyful reflection of her love and guidance. Her home was a gathering place filled with laughter, warmth, and the aroma of her famous peach cobbler and deviled eggs, both eagerly awaited at every family celebration. An avid plant and flower enthusiast, Barbara delighted in nurturing her garden and teaching others how to care for their own.

Barbara was one of eight siblings and is survived by Robert Mitchell Jr., Brenda (Cyruss) Powell, Emma (Glenn) Hancock, Ruth (Floyd) Jones, and Alberta (Fred) Boggs. She was preceded in death by her sisters Marilyn Maples and Clydella Leona Rogers. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, and countless dear friends will carry forward the lessons of love, faith, and resilience she so beautifully embodied.

On Friday, September 12, 2025, Barbara passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will forever live in the hearts of all who knew her.
