Bertha Marie Dukes was born on June 21, 1968, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Etta Carter and Thomas Lindsey.
Bertha completed her education at Westport High School and went on to earn an Associate’s degree in Computer Programming. She worked as a tax preparer for the IRS for 13 years, drove a school bus, and held various other jobs throughout her life.
Bertha was loving, caring, and deeply valued her loved ones. Her dream was to start a T-shirt business named Mama B’s T’s, which she envisioned as a project shared with God and all of her loved ones. “Careful and prayerful always” was her favorite saying. Her favorite color was purple, and one of her and her sister’s favorite movies was The Color Purple.
Bertha departed this life on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Truman Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Marjorie and Edward Dukes; her son, Marcus Neal; and her grandson, Damari Neal.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Etta Carter; two daughters, Tenisha Neal (Dominique Berryhill) and Brittany Dukes; one son, Brandon Neal; one sister, Tiffany Lindsey; 17 grandchildren; and a host of family members, loved ones, and close friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services, LLC. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 3:00 p.m. The disposition will be private.
