Canan Lejeune Cullins Sr., 79, passed away September 6, 2025 at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. He was born February 7, 1946, in Vicksburg, MS to Donald Lejeune Cullins and Edwynne V. Wyatt.
Canan moved to Kansas City, KS with his mother in 1947 where he attended public schools. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1965. Later he worked as a cook at Townhouse Hotel at 7th and State Ave., Walker Electrical Company as an electrical apprentice, Burton Trucking as a mechanic, B and S Body Shop as a automobile body repairman. He was excellent at his craft, creating works of art all around Kansas City, KS and Missouri. People would often see vehicles around town and say “CL” “ as he was affectionately known” painted that car
Canan was a “Jack of all Trades.” He loved to cook which he learned from his grandmother and “His Heart and His Soul” Mrs. Jessie B. Barnett Wyatt who was an amazing cook herself. He was an avid cook and everyone enjoyed the meals he prepared. He also loved to draw and paint. He once painted a mural at Bethel COGIC in Kansas City, KS on 4th and Stewart. He won countless awards for his sewing in contests. He would design his own patterns in order to create beautiful works of art. He once won a contest for clothes he made for himself and family, Canan Jr, Camisha, his wife Freddie Mae. He also made and refurbished beautifully crafted furniture which included couches, chairs, bookshelves, tables and bars. He was also very skilled at plumbing and home remodeling.
Canan was married to Freddie Mae on September 17, 1967. They were married 54 ½ years at the time of her passing. To this union, 4 children were born and 2 children before this union. Canan loved each of his children dearly. Canan had two younger brothers whom he loved very much. They spent time together, going to car shows and dinner with their wives.
Canan transitioned on September 6, 2025. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Donald Lejeune Cullins and Edwynne V. (Charles) Harrison, In- laws: Fred and Hallie Mae Stewart; wife: Freddie Mae Cullins; Daughter; Traci Cullins and Son: Cavill Lee Cullins.
He was survived by his children: Daughter: Camisha (Eric) Walker, Sons: Canan Cullins Jr., Carvaughn (Rhonda) Cullins, Xavier Arnell White, Brothers: Vonzell McKamie and Reginald McKamie, Sisters-in-law: Annie Boyd, Geneva (Leo) Strickland, Beanna Shane, Twila (Michael) Miller, Brother-in-law: Deacon Frank R. (Dianne) Stewart Sr., Grandchildren: Ca’lissa Barnett, William Bailey, Caleb Bailey, Meagan Bates, Tiffani Bates, Jamia Cullins and Dolan Cullins; and a host of special nieces and Nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, at Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services LLC, 2800 East 18th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, 64127. Visitation: 9 - 10 AM
