Carlos Castro, 80, of Kansas City, left us on January 21, 2026. He was predeceased by Dr. Stuart Phipps, the love of his life and his partner of 36 years. Carlos was born on April 25, 1945, to Delia and Carlos Jr. in Chihuahua, Mexico. His childhood was spent in Chihuahua as well as Pueblo, CO; he then went to college in Kansas before making his home in Kansas City, MO. He and Stuart met when Carlos was visiting Chicago in 1977, a lucky coincidence that turned into a lifetime of happiness.

Carlos studied science and chemistry and had a long career in quality assurance with Midwest Research Institute, from which he retired in 2012. He loved old movies, crossword puzzles, tamales on Christmas Eve, and a dirty martini with a full bowl of olives on the side. Carlos enchanted everyone he met with his irreverence, his thoughtfulness, and his entertaining stories. He was a wonderful listener and a caring friend, and together he and Stuart brought together a cherished chosen family who will forever miss and remember this fabulous couple.

When Stuart passed suddenly in 2013, Carlos was buoyed by many memories of their years together, which included raucousdinners with friends, frequent trips to New Orleans, and of course their beloved dogs – who became the center of his world. He adopted Nola in 2022, and she never left his side.

A celebration of Carlos’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 1307 Holmes, Kansas City, MO. This is also where Carlos and Stuart will finally, and eternally, be reunited. All are welcome to come share a story about our dear friend, and to remember the good times together. In lieu of flowers, donations to the church or your animal rescue organization of choice are appreciated.
