Carmen
Crabbe
December 23, 1953 – April 18, 2026
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend, and sister-in-law Carmen Crabbe, a woman of boundless energy and intelligence. Carmen was born on December 23, 1953, in Long Look, Tortola, British Virgins. She was a daughter of the late Ludolph and Emma/aka Emmie Crabbe.
She attended the Long Look Primary and East End Secondary schools before she journeyed to the United States of America. Once Carmen moved to the United States, she continued her education. She attended Job Corps in McKinney, Texas where she obtained a trade and prepared for the General Educational Development (GED).
Over the course of her life, some of her significant accomplishments included her graduation from Monroe College, Fordham Road, Bronx, New York, her two daughters, three granddaughters, one great grandson, and meeting and marrying her spouse – Donald Claxton. Among the many milestones of her well-lived life, Carmen became a proud citizen of the United States. This achievement is but one example that highlights her ability to inspire others by overcoming challenges. She lived a life marked by compassion, strength, and deep devotion to her family. Carmen had many hobbies. Some of them includes cooking, travelling (which includes travelling the high seas with one of her besties – Gwendolyn Cameron Pickering aka Caro), fashion, eating – she had a palate for simple and comforting foods and drinks with favorites including potato salad, peas soup, johnny cakes (fried bread), fish in mayonnaise sauce, coffee, and collecting unique items. However, the roles she cherished most were those of supporting her family. She leaves us with a legacy to strive to do better and to be kind to others. Carmen spent several dedicated years working for the Visiting Nurse Services - New York, the Post Office, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - Kansas City, Missouri, where she was known for her work ethic, kindness, and commitment to others. She was a beautiful soul who cared deeply about kindness and believed in God. Carmen was most pleased when she saw others spreading love and care. Carmen transitioned out of this life at KC Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri after a brief illness, and went home to be with the Lord on April 18, 2026. Through her journey of 72 years, she touched many lives with her wisdom, humor and an unwavering spirit of perseverance. In addition to her parents, Carmen was preceded in death by one sister – Sylvia Newton Lewis and three brothers – Allon Crabbe, Cyril Alcedo Crabbe, and Conroy Crabbe. Carmen is survived by her loving spouse – Donald Claxton, children – Charlene Crabbe, Catania Crabbe, granddaughters – Chasnee Crabbe, Zariha Crabbe, Cataleya Trotter, and a great grandson – Joshua Kinsey. She is also survived by four sisters – Claudia Newton Frett, Clearneal Crabbe Benjamin, Jane Crabbe Slaughter, Carolyn Crabbe, three brothers – Clinton Newton, Cedric Crabbe, Jerone Crabbe, two sisters-in-law – Claudette Crabbe, Rita Simmons Crabbe, and three brothers-in-law – Erick Lewis, Larry Slaughter, and Stanford Benjamin, who were the lights of her life. She also leaves behind many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. In addition, Carmen will be remembered by many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss her. Carmen's legacy of humor, perseverance, and learning will be carried forward by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her remarkable life will forever be an inspiration, a testament to the power of an unyielding spirit enthused with curiosity and resilience. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
Funeral services celebrating Carmen's exceptional life will be held on Saturday May 16, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 4000 Harrison Street, Kansas City, Missouri, with Rev. Dr. Floyd Sullivan, Sr. We invite all who knew and loved Carmen to join us in honoring her memory. Burial will follow in XII Gates Cemetery, 9500 Bannister Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Family and friends may visit Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM until the time of funeral service at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 4000 Harrison Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Carmen was passionate, warm and kind. She shared a close bond with her sisters and brothers, who stood by her through every chapter of her life. She touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Her selflessness, warmth, and generous spirit will be remembered forever. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that will live on in all of us, leaving a void that can never be filled. With Carmen's departure, we will remember a life lived with immense love and a constant sense of caring. The greatest lesson she shared with us is the importance of kindness and the act of showing love to one another. Carmen's presence will be sorely missed, especially her visits, her warm hugs, and those caring check-up calls. We let go of a remarkable woman, a loving wife, mother, a doting grandmother, great grandmother, sister, cousin, friend, sister-in-law, and a kind soul. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the love, joy, and kindness. We will miss her greatly. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all who mourn Carmen's departure.
