Ms. Cathy Christiansen, 48, of Grandview, MO, passed away on July 26, 2026. A devoted mother and educator, her spirit was as bold as her love for Kansas City sports, celebrating Halloween, being an avid reader and lifelong learner, an enthusiast of tattoos and the Big Easy, and a super-collector of people who will feel her absence abundantly. Her unexpected passing leaves a void where there was kindness, compassion, and an unwavering voice that always stood for what was right. Born August 19, 1977, Cathy was the first of four children welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Jack and Judy Christiansen to their home in Belton, MO, where they still reside. Cathy was part of a large family that was not only her parents and siblings, but also beloved aunts and cousins, who she grew up alongside. She graduated from Belton High School, where she participated in track, speech and debate, and theater. She went on to higher education, where she earned 1 undergraduate and 2 graduate degrees. She worked at the Boys and Girls Club in Kansas City, gaining experience with children. She taught for more than 20 years across grade levels and districts, including Center, Hickman Mills, and Grandview Schools, before transitioning into school counseling. She became a counselor outside of the education system. She was a lifelong learner, a dedicated educator, and a trusted counselor, but above all, she was an unwavering advocate for her students and fellow educators. Cathy believed deeply in her students and worked tirelessly to help them succeed. She celebrated the achievements of both her students and peers, fought for them when they needed someone in their corner, and offered comfort and encouragement during their most difficult moments. She loved her family intensely and found her greatest joy in sharing life's journeys, adventures, Chiefs and Royals games, and everyday moments with her family. As someone recently said, "Cathy didn't just show up for you; her whole family would." Cathy’s greatest and most important role, which she loved more than anything, was that of Mom. Since the moment she knew she would be a mom, Maya was Cathy’s whole heart, her greatest pride, and her most enduring contribution to the world. Cathy was Maya’s biggest fan in life and on the volleyball court. She was continually amazed and proud of Maya’s accomplishments and the woman she was raising. Cathy admired Maya Angelou, who once said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” No sentiment could better capture the impact Cathy had on those around her. In the days since her passing, family, friends, colleagues, former students, and countless others have shared stories that reflect that Cathy made people feel seen, valued, supported, and loved. She was an example of the power of showing up for people. Cathy is survived by her daughter, Maya, 19; Father and Mother, Jack and Judy Christiansen; Sister, Veronica Christiansen (Troy); Brother, Jack* (Joel, Kelsey); many cousins, aunts, uncles, and other extended family; enumerable former and current students and colleagues; and a multitude of beloved friends. A Memorial Service will be held at CAIR Building, Grandview, MO on Saturday, August 8 from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Grandview Educational Fund to support the Bulldog T.V. at Grandview High School.
