Obituary

Charles Edward Johnson passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at The Groves (Rosewood) Nursing Facility in Independence, Missouri. He was 79 years old, born on July 26, 1946, in Jonesboro, Louisiana, to Armey Lee and Eula Mae Johnson, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his sisters Alicetean Willoughby and Margaret Marie Charles. He was the fifth of nine children and graduated from Jackson High School. He had a lifelong love of sports, especially football, which he played throughout his childhood and in high school.

Charles married his high school sweetheart, Vera Ann Baker, and to this union one daughter was born, Vanessa. He entered the U.S. Army in 1969 and received an honorable discharge in 1975 after completing four years of service in F Company, 40th Armor, Berlin Brigade, and two years of service in the U.S. Army’s Company H, 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment. He later moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he met and married Carolyn Lucas, who preceded him in death in 2016.

By trade, Charles was a skilled carpenter and worked for several construction companies. For a short time, he also worked for the Ford Motor Company.

Charles had a kind heart and was always willing to help others in need. He was a faithful member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God until his health failed and was dearly loved by his church family and friends. He loved his family deeply and rarely missed attending family gatherings. He greeted everyone with a smile and a fist bump, and if there was any dancing, he could always be found on the floor showing off his moves. His little nieces and nephews always looked forward to getting a dollar from him whenever they saw him.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Vanessa Johnson of Seattle, Washington; stepdaughter, Angelia Bosques; sisters Ruby Lewis (Enstry, deceased) of Washington, D.C., Annie Wade, and Glenda Johnson-Edwards, both of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers Armey Johnson Jr. (Pauline, deceased) of Jonesboro, Louisiana, Lonnie Johnson, and Kenneth Johnson (Hosea), both of Kansas City, Missouri; his grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Memorial service will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, at Glad Tidings Church, 2830 E. 60th St. Kansas City, MO 64130. The service will begin at 3:00pm, there will be no visitation.
