Obituary

Charles William Smith aka “Hot Rod”, 77, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2026 after being in hospice for several medical issues. Charles was born on December 12, 1948 to Ozella Johnson and Charles Smith Sr. in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1967.

Charles was very active in sports during his high school years, especially basketball and baseball. Charles married Raynola Ortega in 1969. They went on to have 3 children, Jason William, Candi Melinda and Charles Ramon.

Charles later married Rene Ellison in 1985 and had Raquel(Rocky) Denise. Charles lived life with energy, determination, and undeniable hustle, building a path defined by hard work and versatility. Throughout the years, he embraced many roles — from managing a record shop to working in security, hospitality, corrections, and community sports as a basketball referee. He had a passion for music, helping guide and manage a singing group. Whether bartending or pursuing his next venture, he brought charisma, resilience, and a larger-than-life spirit that will be remembered by all who knew him. Though not outwardly religious, he believed deeply and accepted Christ as his Savior.
