Dalphane DeMurle
Overton
December 16, 1952 – April 18, 2026
Dalphane DeMurle Overton, known affectionately to many as “Dal” and proudly as “Kwame,” passed away on April 18, 2026, leaving a legacy of leadership, faith, and family. Born on December 16, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the first-born child of the late Mildred Overton-Spencer and Edward Jones.
Raised in East St. Louis, Illinois, Kwame’s natural leadership was evident early on. He was a standout athlete during his high school football years, a drive that followed him through his college days, where he also chose the name “Kwame” to reflect his identity and spirit.
Kwame was a dedicated public servant who later retired after 20-plus years working as a parole officer for the State of Kansas. After his retirement, Kwame worked in the community as a mentor and teacher.
Kwame loved to fish and enjoyed taking fishing trips with his nephew, Kwame, and his dear friend, Mike Gibbons.
Above all, Kwame’s life was anchored by his deep love for the Lord’s Church. He led with a servant’s heart and remained a pillar of strength for his family in every season. He was the quintessential family man, finding his greatest joy in the bonds of kinship.
Kwame was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his brother, Michael Anthony; his daughter, Kayla Akilah Overton; and his granddaughter, Jasmine Marshburn.
His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Marilyn Overton, of 15 years; his siblings, Selena Gant, Brydges White (William), and Sam Elbert Haltom (Scherrill).
His life was further enriched by a special group of “sister and brother cousins”: Vernon Overton (deceased), Gwen Addison (Stanley), Sandra Akins, and Paul Reynolds.
Kwame leaves behind four children from the marital union with Denise Collins: Dalphane Kwame’ Overton (Tiffany), Keisha Denise (Overton) Hines (Justin), Kendra Karmell Overton, and Kellen Ruth Alice Overton; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
From his union with Marilyn Overton, Kwame leaves behind four bonus children: Damion Leon Guliford (Sybil), Trina Danielle Johnson, Felecia Marie Tolliver (Dante), and Mychal Korvette Williamson; and 5 grandchildren.
Kwame leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever remember his commanding presence, his guiding hand, and his unwavering devotion to those he called his own.
A funeral service will be held on May 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Roswell Church of Christ, 2900 Rosswell Ave., Kansas City, KS 66104.
