"Nana"

Sunrise February 9, 1935 — Sunset May 1, 2025

Today, we gather to honor the life and legacy of Gloria Jean Nicholson — lovingly known as Nana — as she completes her sacred journey and returns to the eternal Light. Born in Wewoka, Oklahoma, to Mable Davis and Atward Edwards, Gloria came into this world destined to touch hearts and leave a lasting imprint of love.

She moved through the seasons of life with grace: from her days at Douglas High School to becoming a devoted wife to Orville Nicholson and a nurturing mother to Genene Hendricks and Cornell Duley Sr. Together with Orville, she built a life rich in love and connection. Though Orville preceded her in death, their bond endures.

In Kansas City, Missouri, her light shone brightly. Through her beloved store, Reet-Petite, Gloria became a vessel of kindness, welcoming all who crossed her path. Her smile was a balm, her presence a sanctuary, and every act, no matter how small, was touched by grace.

Her faith anchored her life. Before her health declined, Nana was a dedicated member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, where she lifted her voice in the choir, sharing her love of song and deep devotion with her community.

On the morning of May 1, 2025, Gloria's soul was called home. She released her earthly body and rose into the embrace of the Divine, joining the ancestors who welcomed her with love. This is not her ending — it is her sacred homecoming. Her spirit is free, her love eternal.

She leaves behind a living legacy: her children, 25 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and loving cousins all of whom carry her essence in their hearts — each bearing a thread of her strength, humor, and boundless love.

We remember the sacred rituals she offered: homemade birthday cakes that turned ordinary days into celebrations, and her joy in simple pleasures — from her favorite westerns to action films that mirrored the quiet strength she embodied every day.

Her kindness, resilience, and deep love live on in every act of compassion, every word of encouragement, and every moment of courage shared by those who knew her.

And so, with love, we release her. We bless her journey onward.Gloria Jean Nicholson — Nana — you are deeply loved, forever remembered, and eternally home.
