James Levi Leathers was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on April 5, 1935. He was the fourth child born to Theodore and Mary Leathers. The family moved to Kansas City, MO, when James was around 12 years old. He was educated in the KC school district. Graduating from RT Coles in 1953He married Phyllis Mack in June of 1958; they later divorced. He never had children, but was a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews, and many others. James was a proud Marine. He was stationed in Japan, receiving an honorable discharge in August of 1962. He was quite the traveler. We were always happy when he came home to Kansas City. He always brought us gifts. As a young man, he worked in the Railway Yards in Chicago, United States Post Office in KCMO, sold Insurance, and finally retired after working 13 years for the City of KC Waste Water Division, as a Water Treatment Specialist. In these later years, he often spoke about being grateful for God blessing him with such a long life. Just as we felt blessed to have him. James was deeply loved by many and lived a life filled with joy, music, and meaningful connections. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and being involved in his community, especially attending events in the historic 18th & Vine District in Kansas City, Missouri. He and one of his groups performed in the iconic Blue Room in the 18th & Vine District. James had a generous heart and a passion for giving back. He was also honored to march alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Cicero, Illinois, a testament to his connection to history and his commitment to community. James was truly an entertainer and will always be remembered for sharing his musical talents through heartfelt guitar serenades and his involvement in several singing groups, including one with his siblings. Throughout his life, he had the opportunity to meet and connect with many notable artists, including the legendary Aretha Franklin. His warmth, talent, and joyful spirit touched the lives of many. James was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Margaret Carter, Carrie Eubanks, Theodore Leathers, Lucious Leathers, Marquette Leathers, and Lafayette Leathers. He leaves behind a loving legacy and will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.  

A service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services LLC, 2800 E. 18th Street, KCMO 64127. The visitation will begin at 10:00-11:00 am, with the service to follow promptly at 11:00 am. 

The Interment will take place following the service at Leavonworth National.
