Dr. Joseph Patrick Kappes Jr. D.C., 69, of Freeman, MO, entered Christ’s presence on June 18, 2026.

Joseph Kappes was born on October 14, 1956, to Joseph and Margaret Kappes. He graduated from high school in New Jersey after the exceptional achievement of becoming an Eagle Scout at only 14. He valiantly served in the U.S. Air Force, followed by training to be a doctor. Motorcycle accident injuries as well as his interest in martial arts led him to chiropractic care, which he then pursued, graduating from Cleveland Chiropractic College of Kansas City in 1986. He loved and blessed his patients at Back, Neck & Sports Care Center for over 42 years as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, continually researching how to best help them. He also taught at Park University for over 10 years.

His hobbies included exploring the world while riding his collapsible bicycle, camping, motorcycling with his club, and following the Lewis & Clark Trail with his wife and riding to state and national parks. He received a shodan in the Japan Karate Association in 1974, and later Rokudan with Japan Karate Do Ryobu-Kai in 2001. Dr. Kappes was an internationally known karate instructor, helping play a pivotal role in the International Karate Organization, was recognized as their official doctor, and taught karate locally.

He loved Jesus Christ as his personal savior and attended Colonial Presbyterian Church. He was assured by God’s sovereignty over each aspect of life. He served his community by sponsoring many youth sports teams, primarily baseball.

His family includes Karin H. (Heather), his wife of 22 years, and Joseph's two children by a previous marriage: daughter Genesa with Aryn, Bailee, Bella, Lila, and Harper (deceased), and son Daniel (Audrionna) with Rylan, Tatum, Saela, and Joseph's siblings: Edward, John, Tommy, Richard, Peggy, Kelly, and Bobby.

A memorial service sharing his contributions will be Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00, at First Baptist Church, 1416 Main St., Grandview, MO.

 He served in the U.S. Air Force.
