Kaye L. Horton was born on August 23, 1931, in Durant, Mississippi, to Allen Brown, Sr. and Gertrude Brown, both of whom preceded her in death. She was one of fourteen children. After graduating from high school, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, before eventually settling in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, where she built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and deep devotion to family. Kaye passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025.
She was united in marriage to James Horton, and from this union were born two daughters, Maxine Martin (Jack) and Brenda Clark (Frank). Kaye was preceded in death by her former husband; her parents; her beloved daughter, Maxine; three grandchildren—Ronnie Horton, Michael Martin, and James Martin; and several siblings: Thelmon Brown, Allen Brown, Jr., Addison Brown, Evans Brown, Jurden Brown, Sara Brown, Gertrude Brown, Florzell Beecham, Loretha Morris, Adell Outley, and Fannie Stewart.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Brenda Clark; her grandchildren, Johnny Martin, Treniece Clark, Aysha Sudduth, Dawn Martin, Shania Porter, Frank Clark III, and Sheniece Martin; her siblings, Gonzales Brown and Agness Remon; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends whom she loved deeply.A woman of strength and purpose, Kaye was known as a hard worker and a straight shooter.
She dedicated her life to caring for others, serving as a nurse at Baptist Hospital and as a licensed cosmetologist. Her compassion, discipline, and unwavering commitment were evident in every role she undertook. She also possessed strong financial acumen and successfully owned and managed real estate, reflecting her independence, wisdom, and foresight.Kaye had a heart for children and opened her home to foster children, offering love, guidance, and stability to those in need. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her immediate family and touched countless lives.Her faith was the cornerstone of her life.
She was baptized at an early age at New Kingdom Baptist Church in Pickens, Mississippi. Kaye later became an active and faithful member of Spruce Street Matthew Baptist Church and, subsequently, Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she served diligently and was honored as a member of the Mother Board.
She was deeply respected for her wisdom, leadership, and steadfast devotion to God and the church.Kaye L. Horton will be remembered for her resilience, honesty, generosity, and relentless love for her family. Her enduring legacy of faith, strength, and service will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know and love her.
