Marilyn Louise Franklin was born on July 28, 1941, in Kensett, Arkansas, to Vera Mae Jones and Titus Floyd. She accepted Christ at an early age and often spoke fondly of the ministry of her late grandfather, Reverend Samuel Whitney of Kensett, Arkansas—a spiritual influence she carried throughout her life.
In 1956, Marilyn moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she began building a life rooted in faith, family, and service. On July 10, 1965, she married William “Bill” Franklin, gaining three beloved stepchildren. Though their union lasted five years, Bill preceded her in death in 1970. In 1984, Marilyn was blessed with her only daughter, Monique Washington—a joyful surprise and the light of her life.
Marilyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She wore many hats with grace and dedication: working as an in-home daycare provider, a cook, and running her own private duty cleaning service for many years. Her work ethic was matched only by her love for her family.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—watching The Price is Right and The Young and the Restless (which you dared not interrupt), indulging in sweet treats, and caring for her grandchildren, who brought her endless happiness.
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, Marilyn peacefully departed this life at home, surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband; stepchildren Willetta Cason and Arthur Franklin; sister Lucy Gulledge; and brother Earnest Lee Jones. Marilyn leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by her daughter Monique Washington (Christopher) of Kansas City, MO; daughter-in-law Ramona Franklin of Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren—Kennedi and Kendrick Ferrell of Kansas City, MO, and Christi Washington of Blue Springs, MO; brothers Howard Washington (Netra) and Terry Michael Jones of Kensett, AR; sister Carolyn Bailey (Lindell) of Kensett, AR; devoted caretaker Carmen Dye of Kansas City, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her presence, laughter, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Golden Gate Funeral & Cremation Services, LLC 2800 E. 18th. St. Kansas City, MO 64127. The visitation will begin at 2:00pm, the service will follow at 3:00pm.
