Orval Wilbur (Buck) Lowe, age 86, of Leavenworth, Kansas and Yuma, Arizona passed away peacefully at his home with family on May 19, 2026 after a 4-year battle with cancer. Orval was born on December 25, 1939 and was the 4th of 6 siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur Thomas and Dollie May (Riggs) Lowe and all of his siblings, William Dillon, Darlene Dillon Theel, Charles Lowe, Beverly Lowe West and Larry Lowe. Orval was given the nickname “Buck” as a young child which stuck with him through life. He attended Jarbalo High School and married Joan Threasa Skaggs on August 2, 1958, who survives at the family farm in Leavenworth. Together, they had four children: Carla (Richard) Mullins of Leavenworth; Donna (Michael) Tanking of Tonganoxie; Jerry (Brenda) Lowe of Leavenworth; and Jenna Randall of Las Vegas. He was a loving Grandpa Buck to ten grandchildren: Christopher Mullins; Austin Ward and Tanna Ward-Soetaert; Kaylee, Jerrod and Allie Lowe; Aidan, Annabelle, Aubree and Avery Randall. In addition, he was blessed with four greatgrandchildren: Jaxie, Slade, Teddy and Ramsey Soetaert. Buck was a quiet, kind man of few words who enjoyed helping others. Seldom did he ask his children or anyone to do something for him; instead, he worked alongside them teaching or learning. He was a jack of all trades and could fix or repair basically anything. He loved tinkering in his barn shop and working on his 80-acre farm in Leavenworth. As a young farmer, he raised cattle and grew milo and soybeans. Later, he limited his farm work to raising cattle and growing hay. He loved road trips and camping and took his young family on a vacation each summer. Being the hard worker that he was, a nap was often necessary and on any given afternoon you would likely find him napping in the front seat of a vehicle (quiet and away from the kids), on a lawn chair near the barn, or on his porch swing. During his teen years, Buck worked for various farmers near his many childhood homes. After marriage, he worked at Simmons Mattress factory in Kansas City, Kansas and Meyer Dairy in Basehor, Kansas. At Meyer Dairy he ran the machine that filled the pint cartons of milk for area schools including the school his children attended. Following a union strike, he left the dairy and worked for a short time with Mires Sales and Service installing septic systems. In the mid-1980s, he and Joan bought a private trash service and named the company BJ&K Disposal. It was a demanding job that left little free time but ended up being a worthwhile investment and allowed Buck and Joan to retire in their late 50s. Following retirement, traveling again was Buck’s favorite pastime. Motorhome road trips were taken for several years, and great friends were made in Yuma, Arizona. A winter home was purchased in Magnolia Village and Buck and Joan became snow birds. In Yuma, Buck loved to dune buggy and hike in the desert. He took morning walks along the canal, afternoon bike rides around the village, played card games, and filled the hours in between visiting and helping his neighbors. Buck was diagnosed with cancer in early 2022 and endured several rounds of chemo which held the cancer at bay for 4-years and gave him more time with his family and friends. He was a fighter and remained active up until the spring of 2026. In memory, please take a road trip, “enjoy yourself and have fun” as Buck would say. Memorial donations are appreciated to Huntington’s Disease Society of America or the American Cancer Society. No services are being planned at this time.
