Roselyn Elaine Turner, lovingly known by many as “Pokie,” was born on June 29, 1958. She was the third of eight siblings and would often proudly say she was the middle child. One of her favorite sayings was, “Family is all we got,” a phrase that reflected the love, loyalty, and devotion she carried throughout her life and demonstrated by her parents, Floyd and Shirley Looney.

Roselyn was intelligent, determined, and deeply driven from an early age. She graduated early from Westport High School in 1975. Shortly thereafter, she began working at Industrial Fumigant Company, where she dedicated more than 15 years of service. While working full-time, Roselyn pursued higher education at Rockhurst University, earning her Bachelor’s degree and later obtaining her CPA Certification.

Roselyn went on to build a distinguished career in public service and finance. She served as Director of Finance for the Research Institute at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, and the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri, where she retired in 2025 after more than 23 years of service. She was respected for her professionalism, wisdom, leadership, and unwavering work ethic.

Roselyn was introduced to Victory Temple Church by Gladys Cooley, where she later became a devoted member for many decades. During her time at the church, she faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher, in the nursery ministry, and managed the church’s financial responsibilities. As the demands of caring for and raising a special needs child increased, her ability to regularly attend services became more difficult.

Roselyn loved life’s simple joys. She shared a close and loving relationship with her mother, Shirley, and treasured their Saturday shopping trips together and evenings spent enjoying live blues music. Those moments became some of her most cherished memories. Roselyn was a devoted mother who gave birth to two premature children, “Connie” and “Austin,” whom she lovingly referred to as her miracle babies. Her love for her children and family was immeasurable.

Roselyn was called home on May 13, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, James Austin Turner II; her grandson, Elyjah Cooley; her mother, Shirley Looney; her father, Floyd Looney; her grandmother, Nadine Whitmire; her nephew, Javon Looney; her brother, Rayford Mathis; her sisters, Doris Mathis and Florence Looney; her uncles, Alonzo Dial, Walter Mathis, and Jerome Norris, who passed away two days after her; and her aunts, Katherine Dial and Frances O’Neal.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Consuella Cooley (Jerome Williams); Austin’s longtime girlfriend, Kristal Perry; four grandchildren, Teron Thompson (Kayla Shipp), Ciearra Cooley, Ryan Cooley, and Ryanita Cooley (Ladale Manuel); and ten great-grandchildren: Carniyah, Zevion, Zadavious, Zuri, Charles, Kristen, Ziason, Ladale Jr., Argan, and Nalyjah.

She also leaves behind two sisters, Donna Looney and Toni Herriford; two brothers, Floyd Looney and Mark Looney; twelve nieces and nephews, Latyona, Shontrice, Alfred, Roneus, Jamesha, Tysheka, Laquita, Silky, Mark, Rae-Danielle, and Lakeia; along with a host of aunts, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Roselyn will be remembered for her strength, intelligence, resilience, and deep love for her family. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched and the family she cherished so dearly.
